Current version: 1.3.18
Yahoo has just dropped the YCHT protocol, I do not plan any further development of YChat and I apologise to anyone who this may cause problems for. It is, however, still compatible with my YCHT serevr, available here.

Your Chat ("YChat") is a fully-featured 3rd party client for the Yahoo! Chat system(s). YChat is a stand-alone program, so it does not require the use of a browser*. YChat was created on a 486/66sx2 computer with 24mb RAM, so in other words, it was developed on a slow computer and made for speed. It is always being modified to meet user's needs/wants and to better support Yahoo! Chat features and functions.

On the first day, there was chaos. On the second day, there was YChat.
How so fast? Well, basically, everything I needed to write YChat I had already previously written. I took a chat client/bot I had written for use with iChat, took the bot functions out and changed the way it communicated to the server. I then embedded ChatMan and HTMLCB into it for coloring options, and it has since stayed basically the same. I do not wish to make significant changes to it because I have other, better projects in the works. YChat is still updated when needed, e.g. when Yahoo! breaks something.

Is this your first time installing YChat? Then you want to download the full system install.
Do you already have, or have previously installed YChat and want to upgrade to v1.3.18 ? Then download the updater.

 YChat Program Updater  January 2, 2004, 10:48p  716KB  YChatUp.exe

* You will need a browser to download YChat, and if you have not already done so, you need one to setup a Yahoo! Account.
What's new in v1.3.18 ?
Servers. Like the year; Out with the old, in with the new. Ignore list shows most recent ignores first now.

Older rnews
Fixed login name clearing causing ychat to not log in. A successful login with a name that's not in the alias list now adds it.
Added ignore filtering file, IggyFilt.txt. Create this file in the YChat folder with notepad or similar, each filter mask is on its own line, use all-lowercase, * and ? wildcards are used. See linked example.
Added a recent user activity window to help catch fly-by spammers.
Took out name mismatch checker - buddy list and alternate aliases do not load... for now (this is all yahoo's doing and the cause of the name error)
Added timestamp option, stopped UPX'ing my exes
Changed internal URLs to point here. Added an option in the account grabber to automatically re-retrieve(update) your cookie, and an /updatecookie command to help aid in the damn room list expiration
Added /ignore clear and /ignore cleanup. VB blows for large memory req.. Fixed ignore-by-smiley remove-ignored notice when not remove-on-ignore'ing. Added support for </color> tags.
Anyone worried about not being able to retrieve the room list, it has always worked, but apparently it's been breaking in other clients. If you experience problems with it, just update your cookie by clicking 'change/update account' in the login window.

The YChat story
I've already had my "15 minutes of fame" back in 1998-1999, at the age of 15-16 with YChat. I wrote it under the handle "CyberBob2K". By myself. Yahoo! made a switcharoo in their chat system one day causing an uproar (the new interface blew). So I broke down the communications protocol and wrote a program around it - YChat. An instant hit. It looked and felt just like the previous software they had used; iChat ROOMS. At first it spread entirely through ICQ, but updates became a hassle that way. So then I put it up on a page - an official page. Back then I had my page on GeoCities, before Yahoo! bought them out and went to hell.

They love me! They really love me!

I was getting thousands upon thousands of hits a day. GeoCities even recognised me for my hit count(not personally, automated). Here's the E-Mail I received:

Dear GeoCities Member:

Congratulations, http://www.geocities.com/cyberbobsplace is
very popular and has been receiving a large amount of traffic. Your
site has become so popular, in fact, that our records indicate that
you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide
for a free web site, which is 3GB/month (measured on an hourly basis).
That means at some time during the past few days we had to turn your
site off until the usage fell within the prescribed limit.

If you'd like to prevent this from happening to your site, you
may join one of our new premium services, GeoCities Pro or GeoCities
Webmaster. These packages allow for 10 GB and 20 GB of data transfer
respectively, and also give you the option of purchasing unlimited
data transfer so your site will never be disabled. These packages also
enable you to run an ad-free site at your own domain name (for example,
www.your-dot-com.com) AND get matching email accounts at
that domain (like you@your-dot-com.com).

For more information about our new packages, please visit
http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/info?.refer=bwn. Upgrading your current
GeoCities site to one of our new premium packages is easy - just a few
clicks away - and you don't have to move any of your files.

If you'd prefer not to receive notification when your site is shut
down for going over the transfer limit, you may visit
http://geocities.yahoo.com/opt/bwemail?.refer=bwn to take your name
off of our list. Of course, we will continue to monitor your site's
data usage and turn it off if it exceeds the limits.

Thank you,

Money, money, money. Well, Yahoo! has done it again. I got many of these emails. Unfortunatly there was no program I could write to bring back GeoCities. YChat's popularity has since dwindled to a devoted few, but that's allright, it's a bloated POS now, anyway, being written in VB and all. I have had plans for a new client in C since 2000 but as I said before, I'm not motivated enough lately (past 4 years). It is still in the works. Slowly but surely. I still update YChat when need be, but I try to refrain from major additions.
